Let’s install Nicotine plus 1.2.9 on my Ubuntu 6.06 system I thought. The Nicotine version I use is quit old, and this one looks a hell of a lot nicer.
So i visited the sourceforge.net page and downloaded the tarball. unpacked and installed it. So far so good. Also running the new Nicotine plus is no problem, until … I want to use the “search” function. WTF ? nothing happens when I press the search button…
And here our story begins …
I found out that GTK+ 2 is needed for that, so I downloaded and extracted gtk+2.10.14. However this one requires (the right) glib2, atk. pango and cairo. No problem. Also downloaded them. Then, cairo requires freetype and fontconfig. Ahhh … also downloaded them. Installed freetype, fontconfig, atk, glib2, pango and cairo. Then back to gtk+ …. Ahhh … pango installed without cairo support (yes, I installed pango first). So a new configure, make and make install of pango and off we go again with gtk+.
Now it complains that “pkg-config –modversion glib-2.0 returned 2.12.13, but GLIB (2.8.0) was found”. Thanks for Google, I found the solution to this one also. Created the file “/etc/ld.so.conf” file and added the ” /usr/local/lib” path in this file (that is where the new GLIB libraries are located). now run the “ldconfig -v” command to update the library cache.
AGAIN starting the configuration of gtk+ and … it works ! also “make” and “make install” run without issues …
Finally, nicotine plus will fully work … Or not ?? Why is the search still not working ??
When I figure this one out, I’ll update this story.
Update :
Updating Nicotine Plus to the latest version (1.2.16) does the trick. Working like a charm again …
